What’s better for the enviornment, better for your budget, less hassle, and less commit
Back in the day, renting was a bit of a thing. People didn’t own their TVs. Why would you commit to long-term ownership when there would probably be a better model released next year? Somewhere along the line, these shorter term arrangements began to be seen as a second class solution. But we reckon it’s time to say sayonara to those old-school attitudes and welcome back the renting mindset. Why? Well here are four good reasons for starters.
You might have heard a bit of chat about the “circular economy” recently. It’s a concept that favours keeping consumer goods in circulation over sending them off to a landfill. Wikipedia describes it like this: “a circular economy is a model, production, and consumption, which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling existing materials and products for as long as possible.” Right now, with environmental concerns floating around most people’s minds, renting is an option that provides accessibility to an item for the exact period of time needed - e.g., a treadmill when you’re training for a marathon - before putting it back into circulation. This means less production, less waste, and less impact on the environment.
Like most people, you’ve probably been rendered speechless by the price of cabbages in recent months. Your eyes have likely watered at the petrol pump (and it’s has nothing to do with the smell). So it’s no wonder that renting is enjoying a resurgence. Buying something that you may only need for a couple of months just doesn’t make sense for most people right now. And smaller, more regular payments are much easier to work into tight budgets than a whopping one-off.
When you’re the proud new owner of a fancy fridge that decides to go on the blink, it’s up to you to get it fixed. If you’re renting said fancy fridge, it will be repaired or replaced for you. Expand that scenario out across your appliances and your furniture, and you’ve got a pretty low-stress way of living. Think of it as your own personal technician on call!
Sometimes, being a commitment-phobe us totally okay. Like when you’re about to go travelling. Maybe you’re on a super strict budget and can’t afford the furniture you want. Or perhaps you’re “between living arrangements'“ and have a six month stint in temporary accommodation. Whatever is stopping you from making your place feel like home, there’s no reason you can’t live comfortably anyway. Renting is the perfect way to kit out your home on your terms. So when someone offers to pay you to take an extended sabbatical somewhere exotic (well, dreams are free…) you can say YES with no strings attached.
